PANJIM: The General Secretary of the National Fishworkers
Forum(NFF) Olencio Simoes highlighted the dreadful plight
of Sri Lanka’s fisherfolks who have abandoned their profession and have become wage
labourers. He added that soon Goa will face such a decline if rules are not
followed properly.
He urged the government to immediately work towards
protecting the already depleting fishing stocks in our country by bringing new
legislation so that the fishermen’s livelihoods will be protected in the years
to come ahead.

The international planning committee (IPC) for food
sovereignty organised the Asia Pacific Regional consultation for the III
Nyéléni Global Forum Sri Lanka where 12 countries were present at the meeting
in Negombo, Sri Lanka.
OlencioSimoes who was appointed as a member of the Indian
Nyeleni Steering Committee stated that while on the field trip and in
conversation with the Sri Lankan Fishers desperate fishers quit fishing due to
LED light fishing as the lights used had completely exploited the fishing
stocks in the sea.
The General Secretary of World Forum Of Fisheries Peoples
(WFFP) Herman Kumara, from Sri Lanka, appealed to the Indian government and as
well as Goa government to immediately ban LED fishing as the Indian Fishermen
will meet the same fate as the Sri Lankan Fishermen, as of today the fishermen
of Sri Lanka has quit fishing and now become Labourers in Sri Lanka.
Annamarie Kon Fisherwoman leader from Hawaii stated that the
Indian Government should follow the Hawaiian system of managing the fishing
stock where the fishing community does not fish in spawning grounds areas,
coral areas and other protected areas for almost 2 to 10 years which has helped
the fishing stocks to replenish.
