PONDA: The protest by regional transporters is already taking its toll in parts of the State, with vegetable prices in Ponda market shooting up by 5 to 6 percent on Friday.
According to reports, the supply was normal on Friday but vendors were forced to hike the price by 5 to 6 percent after vegetable agents increased rates.
“On every vegetable produce, the agents supplying vegetables on an average hiked the prices by 5 to 6 percent, which in turn led to increase in selling price of vegetables in the market,” informed Budhwarpeth Vyapari Sanghatana President Shankar Naik.
“From Saturday, we are not sure whether there will be a supply of vegetables as agents have raised doubts following the protest by the transporters,” added Naik.
“Though government will benefit from the toll fees but we the people will have to suffer as traders or agents will hike prices on commodities brought from neighbouring states. There has to be a proper planning and the government should be able to control the vegetable prices,” said Naik.
“If there is no supply from Friday, then the prices of vegetables will rise considerably,” warned Naik.
