BELGAUM: About 20 vehicles, including a Goan vehicle, were damaged in stone pelting incidents following communal tension in Belgaum city late Sunday night.
The supply of vegetables, however, will not be affected due to the tension as truckloads of supplies were dispatched to Goa on Monday morning and sources told Herald that further supplies to the State would be sent with police escort, if the trouble continues.
Police have arrested 29 persons from different communities on charges of causing tension and damages to property at Chavat Galli and Jalgar Galli.
Apart from deployment of huge police force including additional police forces brought in from neighbouring districts as the situation was brought under control, Section 144 has been imposed in the city till Tuesday morning as a preventive measure.
According to sources, tension sparked off about 12 midnight on Sunday among two families that resulted in a riot-like situation which was brought under control due to timely intervention of the police.
The unruly mob which used stones, bricks and soda bottles also pelted stones at police after which the police started the arrests that continued till late Monday afternoon.
