Preference for Goans in security jobs: CM

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Monday assured the House that the government would give preference to Goans in security jobs as Opposition took on him for allowing them to be grabbed by non-Goans.
Kamat was responding to a question raised by Mandrem MLA Laxmikant Parsekar who along with other Opposition members demanded that Goans should get these jobs, during Question Hour.
Parsekar said, majority of security guards employed at government departments are non-Goan and there is huge difference in salaries paid by these departments.
At which point Kamat tried to explain that non-Goans security men were hired due to non-availability of local men. However, Mandrem MLA countered saying Goa employment recruitment society had security men from Goa and were employed in some of the government departments. “They were sent home and agencies with non-Goan security men were selected,” he alleged.
Kamat cut-in saying most of them were later absorbed in different government departments on contract basis.
Parsekar also asked why there was no parity in salaries paid to security guards. “If one department pays Rs 3909 per month others pay Rs 6321 per month” he said.
Opposition grilled the government over large number of security men employed at health institutes such as Goa Medical College, Goa Dental College, Directorate of Health Services,.
There are more security men at these institutes than doctors, pointed out Opposition Leader, Manohar Parrikar.
The GMC has in employment about 229 security personnel. Questioning the need for so many security men, he said, the government spends Rs 4.5 crore on the payment of salaries of security men.
The chief minister said they work in shifts — there are three shifts in GMC and work force get divided.
