MARGAO, OCT 22
The South Goa District Disaster Management Authority has said it will recommend to the government to explore the possibility of directing hundreds of tankers transporting hazardous chemicals on KRC’s Rail on and Rail off (RO RO) service to avoid road accidents on the NH-17.
The suggestion was made by newsmen as a number of accidents involving hazardous chemical tankers had place on the Karmal ghat section of the NH-17 and that the tankers passes through thickly populated areas between Cuncolim and Verna.
The Authority was asked whey these tankers are not directed to use the Rail on Rail of (RO RO) rail service between Mangalore and the Verna yard, avoiding the karmal ghat as well as the thickly populated villages along the NH-17.
The Authority said the suggestion would be placed before the government to study the matter in detail and to issue necessary directions for transportation of the tankers on the RO RO service.
