PONDA: The Additional District and Sessions Court at Ponda on Friday rejected the bail application filed by alleged drug peddler caught with ganja and Methylene-Dioxy-Methamphetamine (MDMA or ‘Ecstasy pill’) drug at Banastarim in Ponda taluka in July last year.
The accused Ramjan Shaikh Sharif, 30, a resident of Banastarim was caught with 200 grams ganja – cannabis also known as marijuana and 15 grams of MDMA, which is a synthetic substance commonly known as ecstasy. Possession of 15 grams of MDMA is considered as a commercial quantity, Public Prosecutor Satyawan Raut Desai said.
Sessions Judge Bela Naik has rejected the bail plea of the Sharif, he said.
“In order to find the sources of the drug and to curb the offence to some extent, his police custody was needed,” Desai said.
Sharif was caught with the drugs on July 21, 2018 in a raid conducted by a team headed by PSI Rohan Nageshkar attached to Anti-Narcotic Cell at Panjim. Currently, the accused is in judicial custody.
An offence under Section 20(B)(II)A of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the accused.
