NSUI holds hunger strike

National Students Union of India (NSUI) observed one-day token hunger strike today demanding handing over of the touted police-drug cartel nexus probe to Central Bureau of Investigation. The demand also included that the attack on NSUI state chief Sunil Khawtankar’s should be investigated by CBI.
Former secretary of Students Cell of Youth Congress Nitin Anambache said they were forced to launch the token hunger strike, as the repeated efforts to realize their demands failed till date.
“We will intensify our agitation district-wise if the government does not heed to our demands. Not just the drug nexus probe but also the attack probe is moving at snail’s pace…We have no faith in the local investigation,” he said.
Though not a large number, the hunger strike from 10 am to 5 pm was supported by eight NSUI members including Khawtankar, three former members of SCYC and three senior citizens. Khawtankar however had to abruptly leave the venue as his upper lips, which was hurt in the attack began bleeding.
“His lips began bleeding and had to be shifted to a city hospital. He suffered high blood pressure. He was nevertheless discharged soon,” said an activist.
Khawtankar was attacked by unknown assailants on July 23 when he was enroute to Bicholim in a car to participate in the signature campaign demanding that the investigation into the police-drug mafia nexus be handed over to CBI.
