More than 20 students fell ill after allegedly consuming a mid-day meal at a government school in Bihar’s Nalanda district on Tuesday. The incident took place at Middle School in Parasi under the Noorsarai police station area, following which the affected students were taken to Biharsharif Sadar Hospital for treatment.
According to officials, the students had consumed soybean rice supplied by an NGO as part of the prescribed mid-day meal menu. Some students reportedly complained that the food lacked salt. Locals alleged that the containers of salt and detergent powder had been kept together in the school kitchen, leading the cook to mistakenly add detergent to the food instead of salt.
Soon after eating the meal, several students complained of dizziness and began vomiting. They were initially given first aid at the school before being shifted to the hospital when their condition did not improve.
Civil Surgeon Dr Jay Prakash Singh visited the hospital and said all the children were out of danger. Bihar Rural Development Minister Shravan Kumar also met the students and spoke with doctors. He said a detailed inquiry would be conducted to determine how the alleged lapse occurred during the preparation and serving of the meal.
