Jharkhand student leader Devendra Nath Mahato called off his hunger strike on Monday evening, hours after the Hemant Soren government announced the cancellation of examinations and government recruitments that had come under scrutiny amid weeks of student protests.
Mahato, who has been undergoing treatment at Ranchi’s Sadar Hospital, ended his fast after meeting a group of ministers and MLAs who visited him at the hospital.
Following the government’s decision, Mahato expressed his appreciation for the steps being taken and said the ongoing investigation was focused on those allegedly responsible for irregularities in the examination system.
He said students would continue to support efforts aimed at eliminating corruption from the state’s recruitment and examination processes. He also assured that the student community would cooperate with the government in implementing reforms to restore transparency and credibility to the system.
“They are making a concerted effort to reach the true kingpins behind these gangs,” Mahato was quoted as saying.
The decision to cancel the examinations and recruitment processes comes after sustained student protests over alleged irregularities in government job examinations in Jharkhand. Mahato’s hunger strike had emerged as a prominent part of the agitation, putting further pressure on the state government to address the students’ concerns.
With the fast now called off, attention is expected to remain focused on the ongoing probe and the government’s proposed measures to prevent examination malpractice and ensure a transparent recruitment process in the state.
