Goa’s tiatr takes national stage

Goa’s beloved ti atr has received a signifi cant national endorsement with its inclusion as the 56th element in the Na tional Inventory of Intangi ble Cultural Heritage of In dia. This milestone opens a new chapter in long-stand ing efforts to preserve, pro mote, and secure interna tional recognition for the indigenous Goan theatre tradition. The Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) welcomed the development, stating that the recognition places tiatr firmly on India’s national cultural heritage map. It provides a stronger foun dation for the next stage of its journey — seeking inscription on the UNESCO Representative List.

The official National Inventory, maintained by the Sangeet Natak Akademi under the Ministry of Culture, lists ti atr at No. 56. “The Assembly resolution and the formation of the task force demonstrate that the effort to secure UNES CO recognition is no longer merely a demand from the tiatr fraternity. It has be come an institutional effort involving the government and the cultural communi ty. We are grateful to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Art and Culture Minis ter Ramesh Tawadkar for extending their support to this cause,” said Vivek Naik, Director of Art & Culture.

Addressing the media, Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) Pres ident Anthony Barbosa said the recognition was a proud moment for the entire tiatr fraternity and for generations of Goans who have kept the tradition alive. “Tiatr is not simply theatre or entertainment. It is a liv ing expression of Goa’s language, culture, social realities, humour, traditions, and aspirations. Its inclusion in the Na tional Inventory is an important recognition of the cultural value of tiatr and will give greater strength to our efforts to preserve and promote this art form,” Barbosa said. He expressed gratitude to the Government of Goa—par ticularly Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Art and Culture Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, former minister Govind Gaude, and all the MLAs who supported the resolution moved in the Goa Legislative Assembly—for backing initiatives aimed at strengthening tiatr and taking it to wider plat forms.

TAG Vice-President Marcos Gonsalves said the recogni tion represented the culmination of sustained efforts by the tiatr fraternity, the Academy, and the government. “This is a historic and emotional moment for every ti atrist. Generations of artistes have devoted their lives to tiatr without expecting anything in return. Their contribu tion has now received national recognition. However, this is only an important milestone. Our larger objective remains to secure UNESCO recognition for tiatr,” Gonsalves said. He noted that the Government of Goa had already taken significant steps towards pursuing the UNESCO objective. A resolution has been passed in the Goa Legislative Assem bly seeking recognition of tiatr by UNESCO, while a task force has also been constituted under the Department of Art and Culture to work toward the goal. The Academy noted that the national inventory is main tained by the Sangeet Natak Akademi as part of India’s ef forts to document, safeguard, and promote its diverse in tangible cultural heritage.

With a history spanning 133 years, tiatr has emerged as one of Goa’s most distinctive forms of popular theatre. It has evolved into a unique combination of drama, songs, satire, humour, and social commentary, reflecting the changing social and political realities of Goa while preserv ing the Konkani language and Goan identity. Barbosa said national recognition should encourage greater documentation and preservation of tiatr’s rich leg acy. “We must now intensify efforts to document old scripts, songs, performances, and the contributions of veteran tia trists. The history of tiatr belongs to Goa and must be pre served systematically for future generations,” he said. Gonsalves added that the recognition should also en courage younger generations to take up the art form. “Tiatr has survived because every generation has con tributed to it.

We must ensure that the younger generation understands its cultural importance and carries this tradi tion forward. The national recognition gives us a tremen dous opportunity to present tiatr not only before India but before the world,” he said. The Tiatr Academy of Goa expressed its appreciation to the Government of Goa, the Department of Art and Culture, the tiatr fraternity, and all those who have contributed to the preservation and promotion of the art form. TAG member Fr Doel Dias said that the inclusion of tiatr as the 56th element should be regarded as a new begin ning in the collective journey towards achieving UNESCO recognition, ensuring that Goa’s unique theatre tradition remains a vibrant part of its cultural identity for genera tions to come.
