Two airport security personnel were injured after a licensed pistol carried by a passenger accidentally discharged during mandatory security screening at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi on Monday morning, officials said.
The passenger, identified as Kamlesh Kedarnath Rai, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district, was travelling to Mumbai with his wife on Air India Express flight IX1810 from Varanasi.
According to officials, Rai was carrying a licensed 7.62 mm pistol along with 21 live cartridges. The firearm was being inspected as part of the prescribed security procedures when a round was accidentally fired.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation said the passenger was escorted to the designated screening area to complete the mandatory formalities. During the handling and inspection of the weapon, the firearm discharged unexpectedly.
The bullet reportedly ricocheted and struck two screening personnel, identified as Rohit Raj and Suman Kumari, leaving both injured.
Officials said the incident occurred during the security screening process and that further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge are awaited.
