Porba Vaddo XI dethroned holders Gaura Vaddo XI 6-5 via the tie-breaker in the finals after both the teams were involved in a 1-all draw to lift the Aleixo Joao Memorial Cup 2010 Calangute Veterans inter-ward football tournament organised by Calangute Association at Calangute Association grounds, here on Sunday.
After a barren first half, Gaura Vaddo took the lead inside 10th minutes through a solo effort by hardworking Simao. Porba Vaddo mounted pressure and their concerted efforts produced the desired result as Jayesh Sakhalkar headed home a Sachin Vengurlekar corner with few minutes remaining for the final hooter.
Porba Vaddo kept their nerves cool to slot home all its penalties winning the match 5-4. Porba Vaddo Keeper Glen saved Simao’s penalty to dethrone reigning champions Gaura Vaddo. Sachindra, Glen, Marcelino, Praveen and Tukaram were bang on target for Porba Vaddo while Navnath, Santos, Anthony and Gabby found the mark for Gaura Vaddo.
Porba Vaddo received Rs 7,000 and the trophy while Gaura Vaddo had to be content with Rs 4,000 and a trophy.
Following individual prizes were awarded: Best midfielder: Marcelino Pereira (Porba Vaddo). First and second goal of finals: Simao (Gaura Vaddo)/Jayesh (Proba Vaddo). Best goalkeeper of finals: Sebastian Noronhas (Gaura Vaddo). 1st hat-trick: Jayesh (Porba Vaddo). Best disciplined team: Naikka Vaddo. best defender: Tukaram (Porba Vaddo). best forward: Simao (Gaura Vaddo). Mr. Fit 2010: Sebastian Silveira (Tivai Vaddo).
V.M. Prabhudessai, SAG Executive Director, Bruno Coutinho ex-international, were the chief guest and guest of honour respectively who later gave away the prizes alongwith Abeline Menezes, ZP (Calangute), Michael Lobo, ZP (Saligao), Alirio Lobo, general secretary, Calangute Association, Luis Gonsalves, sports secretary, Calangute Association among others.
The tournament was sponsored by Anthony Menezes. He proposed the vote of thanks.
