MARGAO: The Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Committee on Friday demanded the roll back of the Ordinance promulgated by the Centre in respect of the new Land Acquisition Act, terming it as anti-people and anti-farmer.
The youth Congress workers submitted a memorandum to the South Goa collector demanding necessary action in the matter. Armed with banners and placards, the youth Congress workers held a protest outside the south Goa Collectorate demanding scrapping of the Ordinance.
National Youth Congress Goa in-charge, Utkarsha Rupawate later told the media that the ordinance seeks to take away the rights of the farmers in respect of agricultural land.
The memorandum accused the BJP government at the Centre for not following the routine democratic process, saying the Union government has promulgated as many as nine ordinances in the last seven months. “This makes it clear that the BJP government is not ready to face the opposition in Parliament and thus using backdoor ways of implementing their anti-farmer, anti-poor agenda,” Rupawate said, while saying that many political parties and leaders have raised their objection on the backdoor method of running the government.
The Youth Congress workers recalled that the BJP had supported the new Act on Land Acquisition Rehabilitation and Fair compensation just one-and-half-year ago. “It was implemented after a detailed debate in Parliament, with all political parties, including the BJP supporting the Bill,” she said, demanding to know the reasons behind bringing in changes to the law by an emergency order like Ordinance.
Those who participated in the protest were GPYC Chief Xavier Fialho, Gauri Shirodkar, Varad Mardolkar, Zameer Ahmed, Deepal Pai, Aston, etc.
