PORVORIM: Agriculture Minister and Nationalist Congress Party national President Sharad Pawar stated that NCP is not in favour of mining activities which will destroy the environment of Goa.
Pawar was addressing at the Workers’ Convention 2013 organized by NCP State unit at Ghadge Maharaj Hall at Porvorim on Tuesday.
“NCP is in favour of legal mining and since lakhs of Goans are dependent on mining for their livelihood, I will take up the matter with the Prime Minister and concerned ministers and officials and try to sort out the issue,” said Pawar.
“Goans have to take interest in agriculture, fishing and tourism sector. The Central government has devised several schemes for the farmers. In Goa, there is a lot of scope for agriculture and horticulture in particular,” said Pawar and urged Goan farmers to avail benefit of the schemes and increase their agricultural income.
“Similarly in fishing, there is a lot of scope to increase their earnings. Goa is a tourist place and lakhs of tourists visit Goa every year. If better infrastructure is provided then the arrivals of tourists in Goa will increase many folds which will provide employment to more people,” he added.
NCP General Secretary Prafula Patel appealed to the senior leaders of NCP to forget personal differences and work together to strengthen the party.
“There is no future for any party if its foundation is not strong. Hence, all the leaders should endeavour to solve the problems of the poor people and gain their confidence,” added Patel.
Member of Parliament Supriya Sule, Observer for Goa Deepak Kesarker, former minister Jose Philip D’Souza, new NCP Goa President Nilkant Halarnkar and new Youth President Yuri Alemao also spoke on the occasion.
Outgoing president Surendra Sirsat welcomed the gathering, while Dr Francis Almeida proposed the vote of thanks.
