PANJIM: Power tariffs for different categories of consumers have been hiked by the electricity department with effect from April 1 this year.

The electricity department notified the new power tariff schedule for domestic, commercial, industrial, agricultural and high tension consumers. The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC), had recommended increase in power tariff by approximately eight per cent for domestic consumers.
For domestic consumers the hike in tariff ranges from 10 paise per unit to 25 paise per unit.
For 0 to 100 units consumers, the new tariff will be Rs 1.60 per unit instead of Rs 1.50 per unit while, for 101 to 200 units, the new tariff will be Rs 2.35 per unit; 201 to 300 units – Rs 2.95 per unit; 301 to 400 units – Rs 3.90 and above 400 units – Rs 4.50.
Similarly, the new tariff for hotels has been revised from Rs 4 to Rs 5.25 per unit.
According to electricity department officials, the power tariffs in the State were not revised for the last two years due to COVID-19 pandemic. The power tariff was last revised in 2019-2020 and the same was charged till date.
The said Tariff Order is effective from April 1, 2022 and shall, unless amended or revoked, continue to be in force till further orders of the Commission, states the notification.
Overall, across all categories of consumers, the average increase in the tariff approved by the
JERC vis-à-vis the prevailing tariff is 1.58 per cent as the tariff for some other categories has been reduced.
Meanwhile, Power Minister Sudin Dhavlikar said that he will meet Union Power Minister and seek funds from the Centre to carry out various works in the department including work of changing the high and low tension conductors which have weakened over the years.
“We will meet Union Power Minister before May 15 to see if we can get funds from Union Power Ministry. Our high and low tension conductors are weak. We need to change them. We will seek help from Centre to do this,” he said.
