MARGAO: Nine murders have been reported in last 14 months from Salcete taluka, show police records. This spine-chilling statistics certainly raises a serious question mark on the safety status of Salcete residents.
This year in last two months, two murders took place in the taluka – one each from Nuvem and Colva (the sensational murder case of Verca resident 80-year-old Trinidade Martins). Last year seven murders occurred.
Of the seven murders reported in 2021, six were detected and investigation in one is still pending. Out of these seven cases, two each were reported at Margao and Colva, while one each in Maina-Curtorim, Cuncolim and Fatorda.
As compared to this, in the year 2020 five police stations from Salcete registered nine murders and detected all of them. Out of these nine cases, three were registered by Maina-Curtorim police, two by Margao and Cuncolim each. One each was registered by Colva and Fatorda.
In 2019 five murders took place and all were detected. Out of these five murders, two were registered by Margao police and one each by Maina-Curtorim, Colva and Fatorda police stations.
According to police sources, influx of migrants and use of “muscle power” (nexus between politicians and goons) are some of the reasons for rise in crimes in villages of Salcete taluka.
