Furtado alleges Rs 8 cr scam in CCP

Corporation of City of Panjim (CCP) corporator Surendra Furtado today claimed scam of Rs eight crore by the CCP between 2006 and 2009.
Information procured by Furtado under Right To Information (RTI), shows that the State had released several lakh of rupees to the corporation in each of these four years, which is calculated to a total of Rs eight crore.
“Government had given a total budget of Rs eight crore to the CCP to purchase property for garbage treatment plant at Bainguinim, near Heera Petrol Pump at Patto, Taleigao and Dona Paula. Besides, budget was also granted for the said plant at EDC,” Furtado told reporters.
The information from the Directorate of Municipal Administration reveals that in February 2006, the Government released grant-in-aid of Rs 16.92 lakh for the ‘construction of composting stations in Phase’, to the CCP.
In May 2006, grant-in-aid of around Rs 17.08 lakh was released towards ‘purchase of excavator’, and in June 2006, the Government released around Rs 54.96 lakh for other purchases to the CCP.
Furthermore, in November 2008 CCP was yet again granted an amount of Rs 43 lakh towards ‘acquisition of land for integrated sanitary landfill and solid waste management site for CCP at Bainguinim.’
A year later, in June 2009 two separate amounts of around Rs 46.99 lakh and Rs 21.60 lakh were released for land acquisition for setting up of dry recyclable material sorting centre and compost station, and towards collection transportation and disposal of the waste from the hotels and restaurant, respectively.
The corporator stated that the amount was given to the CCP to eliminate problem of garbage but instead, the CCP complained that the Government is not cooperating. “Where is all the money? The CCP is inefficient and is passing the buck on the Government of being not cooperative,” he said.
Furtado has threatened that he will file a Public Interest Litigation against the CCP for misusing funds.
“They are only interesting in spending money on consultants…I will approach the court to find out what CCP has done with the money,” he said.
