Students celebrate different aspects of womanhood for International Women’s Day

 VVM’s Shree
Damodar College of Economics and
Commerce in association with Directorate of Extra Mural Studies
and Extension Services, Goa University, Asha Sadan Social Centre, sisters of
Holy Family congregation and Kiren Niketan Social Centre celebrated
International Women’s Day at Ravindra Bhavan, Baina. The theme of the
celebration was ‘We all have a wonder woman inside us’ and was coordinated by
Madhumeeta Dhar, Assistant professor of Commerce, Shree Damodar College of
Commerce and Economics.

Chief Guest for the
function was Lawanya Shetye, nodal officer to Health Minister for Directorate
of Women’s and Child Development and member of Goa State Women’s Commission. In
her speech, the Chief Guest encouraged women to be the voice of the voiceless.
She spoke about how we can put a full stop to domestic violence and abuse of
women.

Resource person Dr
Radhika, a dietician, spoke on the topic Health and Nutrition. She emphasised
on nutrition during adolescence and for overall growth and development. Dr
Radhika also spoke about nutrition during pregnancy and also touched on the
topic of menopause. She said that as Indians, every individual can maintain
good diet by having simple Indian food like daal, chapati and rice.

Resource person Dr
Jyoti Redkar, a gynaecologist, dealt on women’s menstrual hygiene. She
encouraged girls to speak about their menstrual problems to their parents,
friends and doctors and seek their advice.

Lively dances like
dandiya and bhangṛa were performed by
members of Asha Sadan Social Centre and Kiran Niketan. Songs were sung by
students of Damodar College along with Dhar. Every woman present for the
function was presented a pack of sanitary napkins.

Principal
of Damodar College Dr Prita D Mallya, in her speech, appreciated the efforts
put by the students and teachers in organising the program, which was a huge
success. She also motivated the women to follow the guidelines given by the
resource persons. Dr Mallya encouraged the women to educate themselves and
their children as it would be useful for the children to seek gainful
employment. The function ended with the singing of the national anthem.
