MARGAO: A herd of cattle of unknown owners ruined the vegetable cultivation of nearly 20 farmers in the last few days at Arlem, in Raia village, resulting in loss of more than Rs 50,000. Farmers have urged the concerned authorities to help them out in protecting their vegetable cultivation.

According to farmers, a herd of cattle has destroyed their vegetable cultivation, despite having protection of the nets around.
“We have noticed that a herd of cattle is moving in the vicinity of the farmlands where the farmers have undertaken vegetable cultivation at Arlem. The herd eats their standing vegetables, which has resulted in major loss to the farmers,” said Rosario Fernandes.
He further said that nearly 20 farmers have been cultivating vegetables over here for the last many years, but cattle have ruined all their vegetables, resulting in huge losses.
Another farmer Ana Maria Fernandes also said that the cattle gain entry into the farmlands by breaking the safety nets erected in and around.
“We tried to safeguard our vegetable cultivation for the whole day. However, cattle are damaging it at night time,” she informed.
Farmers have a doubt that cattle are from nearby areas, but they were not able to find out the owners of the cattle.
“The nuisance created by the cattle has resulted in loss of thousands of rupees to each of the farmers. This is the time to earn something after working hard in the fields for hours and hours,” said Josphine Pango, a farmer.
Taking a note of the incident and upon the request of farmers, former MLA and Independent candidate of Curtorim Constituency Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Sunday rushed at the site and heard the grievances.
Cattle nuisance is not only restricted to the fields but even the commuters face the brunt of it, mostly during the night time.
According to locals, herds of cattle are found squatting on the road in the areas of Arlem and Fatorda, especially during the night.
