MARGAO: Black Arrow, Curtorim got the better of hosts Villa Marex Boys, Chandor 3-1 to win the all-Goa 8-a-side open football tournament organised by Villa Marex Boys, at Villa Marex ground, Cavorim-Chandor, Sunday.
Hosts were first to settle down and drew the first blood in the 10th minute when striker Jeston Martins bulged the net off well measured pass from Alleluia Fernandes beating the Curtorim goalkeeper Manuel Castana hands down.
However, their joy was short-lived when Sertorio Monteiro cancelled the lead with stiff grounder at the stroke of lemon break.
Post resumption, Black Arrows intensified their forays and fired couple of salvos in the rival citadel. Diego Dias regained the lead with pile driver while Sertorio later sealed the rival fate with superb header.
Thereafter, Villa Marex got several opportunities to score but Black Arrow goalkeeper Manuel Castana failed all the moves with superb saves.
Ex-minister for urban development Joaquim Alemao was the chief guest and gave away the winners and runners-up prizes.
Also present were Zilla Member Seema Cleofasio Dias, Assistant Parish Priest of Chandor Fr. Manuel Rodrigues, Cavorim-Chandor Sarpanch Etelvina Travasso, Panch Andrew Peixote, social worker Basil Fernandes and Alphonso Rebello.
Black Arrow were richer by Rs 25,000 and a trophy while Villa Marex received Rs 20,000 and a trophy. Individual prizes awarded were as follows: Man-of-the-match: Sertorio Monteiro (Curtorim), First scorer of the finals: Jeston Martins (Chandor), Best defender of the finals: Alleluia Fernandes (Chandor), Best goalkeeper of the finals: Manuel Castana (Curtorim), Senior player of the tournament: Teofilo Dias (Chandor) and Upcoming player: Steve Cardozo (Chandor).
