Now, healthier midday meal for students from Classes I-VIII

The mid-day meal is supplied across 1,462 pre-primary, primary and upper primary schools, covering nearly 1.60 lakh students.

PANJIM: Students from Class I to Class VIII will now be served a new and healthier midday meal with the elimination of refined flour or maida.

New dishes like mixed vegetable idlis and mix vegetable pulao, chole chapatti, vegetarian kurma and potato bhaji will be introduced.

Director of Education ShaileshZingde in a circular issued to the schools has said that as per the suggestions received from various institutions across Goa, most of the students do not prefer Sweet MoongUsal and Dry Chana Usal on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

“Further, as per the directives received from the Government of Goa, it is informed to strictly avoid serving items made of refined flour Maida (Pav) under PM POSHAN (Mid Day Meal) menu. Therefore, it has been decided by this office to make a slight change in the ongoing PM POSHAN (Mid Day Meal) menu,” the circular stated.

The director said that the menu shall be either a wheat-based item or a rice-based item, on an alternate basis.

“The options shall be exercised on discussion with the PTA/school management committee. The content may be brought to the notice of the PTA members,” the DoE said.
