PORVORIM: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to construct an old age home at Mapusa for which provision of Rs 50 lakh has been made in the budget proposal for the financial year 2014-15.
Addressing media persons after presenting the budget estimates for the year 2014-15 in the special council meeting on Tuesday, MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari said there was request from the councillors that the council should look after the well-being of senior citizens who do not have the means of livelihood and it is for this reason, MMC has decided to build an old age home.
“The government is looking after the maintenance of street lights. However, MMC has decided to replace the old fixtures of street lights for which allocation of Rs 10 lakh has been made in the budget estimates. Rs 60 crore has been earmarked for development works in Mapusa,” informed Falari.
“The strength of temporary workers on roll presently is not sufficient to attend to routine works of MMC. Hence, it has been decided to increase the work force marginally. The salaries of the MMC staff including temporary workers and casual labourers employed to collect garbage on door-to-door basis works out to over Rs 7 crore,” said Falari.
In the budget estimate for the financial year 2014-15 presented by the MMC chairman, on the income front construction license fees and taxes on houses and land has been projected as Rs 2.20 crore and Rs 2.53 crore respectively.
Octroi from petrol, diesel and lubricants is expected to yield Rs 3 crore. Income from market (Sopo) has been shown as Rs 1.10 crore, while rent from buildings/shops/stalls will generate Rs 1.59 crore. Grants towards developmental works under JNNURM and MPLAD schemes have been indicated as Rs 41 crore.
