CALANGUTE: With Calangute expected to see a huge rush of tourists starting this weekend for the Christmas-New Year’s holiday season, PI Dattaguru Sawant said Chief Minister Pramod Sawant recently held a meeting with police officers during which he issued directions to act against illegal activities.
As part of this, Calangute police have started a Motor Vehicle Act enforcement drive in the Calangute-Candolim beach-belt and on the first day detained two private vehicles, a Mahindra Thar, and a Yamaha Fascino scooter, which were given on rent to the tourists. Both vehicles have been detained and kept at the police station.

“The tourists were let go without any hardship after obtaining their details. The owners of both vehicles are being booked for giving their private vehicles on rent, hence report against them is being submitted to the JMFC Mapusa for further action,” PI Sawant said.
He added that it was noticed during patrolling beggars are creating nuisance by begging for alms with minor children. Hence special lady police personnel were mobilised and 12 beggars along with minor children were apprehended. They will be produced before the JMFC, Mapusa, under the provisions of the Prevention of Beggary Act 1960.
DGP Jaspal Singh visited Calangute police station on Friday to inaugurate the traditional Christmas crib.
SP North Nidhin Valsan also visited the coastal tourism hub on Thursday.
