PANJIM: An apparently disturbed mother jumped in front of a train and dragged her six-year-old son along, about a kilometer-and-a-half from Thivim railway station Saturday morning.
The woman identified as Sarika Pednekar, in her 40s, along with son Vignesh, was crushed to death on the Thivim-Sirsaim railway tracks between 9 and 10 am.
Konkan Railway police said the motive behind the drastic step was being investigated. Sarika’s husband, who was in Pune when she took the leap of death with her son, is expected to reach Goa on Sunday, which is when the forensic doctors at Goa Medical College will go ahead with the autopsy on the mutilated bodies.
Police Inspector Vincy Paes said the woman, hailing from Narvem in Bicholim was returning to her in-laws’ place.
“Her brother dropped both at Bicholim bus stand at about 8:45 am. We suspect she alighted from the bus in between and walked towards the railway track. We are still investigating,” he told Herald.
A purse containing Rs 800 cash and ‘mangalsutra’ was found near the bodies.
Police have ruled out foul play as there were no signs of struggle, which is also established by the train driver’s statement who telephonically told the police that she suddenly leapt in front of the moving train.
“We will record the statement of the train driver and her families,” Paes stated.
Sources said that before leaving her parents house, she said ‘good-bye’ to them as if it was her last.
