VASCO: Holy Cross Sports Club, Arambol will take on the resurgent Sai Avtar Sports Club, Anjuna in the final of HQ-NRB 43rd Bandodkar Memorial Football Tournament 2016 organised by Baina Sports Club at MPT ground, Baina-Vasco, on Sunday, at 4.30 p.m.
Holy Cross SC began their campaign with a 4-0 drubbing of Goa Velha Sports Club to enter the quarter-finals.
Subsequently, Holy Cross SC boys avenged their loss against last year’s winners, St Savio Sports Club, Calangute defeating them 1-0.
In a lop-sided semi-final encounter, they humiliated Pilerne SC, Pilerne 5-0 to storm into the final.
Sai Avtar Sports Club, Anjuna began on a tentative note by edging out Panchwadi United Sports Club, Panchwadi, 5-4 via tie-breaker.
In the quarter-final, Sai Avtar SC held their nerve again and ousted Saligao Sporting, Saligao, 4-2 via penalties.
Sai Avtar SC managed to overcome adversity in the semi-Final, with a well contested match against Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda, yet again left to be decided on penalties. They outplayed Don Bosco boys 3-1 on penalties thanks to a stellar show by goalkeeper Soma Korgaonkar, who made three brilliant diving saves in a pressure situation to lead their team to the final.
