PERNEM: Stepping up the drive against illegal sand extraction in Pernem taluka, the Pernem Deputy Collector on Thursday detained 19 trucks and over 150 canoes at Bhalkhasan-Korgao and Kiranpani-Palyem.

According to reports, a strong police force under the guidance of Pernem PI Tushar Lotlikar was present at the site. The drive began when nearly 19 unloaded trucks were at the site to transport sand, while over 150 canoes were seized by the mines officer. Later, the deputy collector released all the seized trucks after affidavits were taken from the truck owners stating that they will not illegally carry sand in the future.

The drive was conducted in the presence of Pernem Deputy Collector Meena Naik Goltekar, Pernem Mamlatdar Tarik Thomas, RTO officer Vargis and mines department officers.

It is learnt that rampant sand extraction in Kiranpani and Korgao in Pernem has led to rapid coastal erosion, traffic congestion and influx of large migrant population and many accidents have taken place in these areas.
