Govt plans to hire ex-servicemen to train marine police: CS

Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar Srivastava has stated that the State government has plans to engage retire naval and coast guard officials to train the State Marine Police, which has been equipped with High Speed Interceptor Boat (HSIB) to secure the state’s coastline.
The chief secretary was speaking to reporters along the sidelines of the launching of the 12-tonne HSIB boat at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Marine Police has been allotted five HSIB boats and the latest 12-tonne HSIB boat will be deployed at Betim, while two HSIB’s have been stationed at Betul and one each are at the Harbour and Siolim.
Some Marine Police staff had undergone training conducted by the GSL in the operation of the boats.
“Some Marine Police staffers are not well versed in the technical aspects of the boats, hence the government plans to seek the services of retired personnel from the navy and coast guard to train the marine police,” said Srivastava.
“We need a trained staff as these boats required a boat master and other technical staff,” said Srivastava.
He also informed that the state government has proposed to construct six jetties in the State and initially, two will be built at a cost of Rs 2 crore.
It is learnt that as part of the contract, the GSL has trained the Marine Police from different states.
In the last one year, 180 police personnel from the west coast have been trained in 17 batches to operate the boats, while police staff would also be imparted with maintenance aspects in the future.
