Duo rescued from drowning

CANACONA: Fire and Emergency Services personnel on Sunday rescued two persons from drowning at Palolem.

Fire and Emergency services officials said, “We received an emergency call at 5.30 am that a female foreigner and a local have been trapped around on the rocks at Ovrem side of Palolem beach due to rough weather. 
Immediately, leading fire fighter Tulshidas Desai accompanied by Chandras Pagi, Chetan Prabhu and Lekhak Daikar rushed to the spot. With no life guard at the site, they managed to rescue the duo with the help of another local, bringing relief to the friends of the foreign tourist.” Canacona Fire and Emergency Services officials said, “Four foreigners had gone swimming near the rocks at Palolem beach early Sunday morning and suddenly they found themselves struggling due to the rough weather condition. However, three of the foreigners swam to safety.” 
“A local ventured into the rough waters to help one of the stranded foreigners without any safety gear, also got trapped. Later, the locals gathered and contacted the Fire and Emergency Services personnel, who later rescued the duo from drowning,” they said. 
Palolem locals said that water levels were rising at the beach at around 11.30 pm on Saturday and a similar situation continued early Sunday morning, which they say may be due to Cyclone Ockhi.
