PANJIM: The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday asked a series of questions over the Saligao garbage plant and claimed that the proposed upgradation was only to pump in more of the taxpayers’ money to get commissions from a failing plant.
Addressing media in the city, AAP Saligao coordinator Mario Cordeiro and General Secretary Pradeep Padgaonkar challenged the government to come clean on the subject.
AAP’s questions ranged from world class technology to picnic spots, the terms used by the then chief minister to lure those opposed to the plant then.
AAP said that it was claimed that the plant was built with “world class” technology on BOOT basis for a period of 10 years and commissioned around three years ago.
“Has the world class machinery become obsolete in a mere three years that it requires up gradation?” they asked.
“The then chief minister had made a statement in the Saligao Village Panchayat that this “world class technology” plant is designed to treat unsegregated waste,” they said.
“The Solid Waste Management Plant (SWMC) is now unwilling to accept unsegregated waste from the local bodies as the plant is not capable of treating the same. Was compromise made to help the operator obtain lesser “world class technology”?” they demanded to know.
Further, they said, “The plant was claimed to be clean enough to be a ‘picnic spot’ but now emitting an unbearable stench even in the neighbouring villages.”
“The plant has a declared capacity of 100 metric tonnes per day. Is it functioning as per the agreement, the solid waste management rules 2000/2016?” they said.
