VALPOI: The Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) has decided to re-auction 11 vacant shops in the market complex and administrative building.
The decision was taken at the council meeting convened by Chairperson Parvin Shaikh in the presence of Vice Chairperson Sayyad Sarfraz, councillors – Shaizin Shaikh, Akhtar Shah, Ramdas Shirodkar, Atul Datye and Rashikant Chari and Chief Officer Cynthia Mesquita.
Meanwhile, the VMC has also decided to reassess all taxes. At the meeting it was pointed out that the Valpoi Municipal Council has not reassessed commercial taxes for seven years, which has affected the municipal revenue.
Stating that tax reassessment should be undertaken after every five years, Parvin Shaikh said, “VMC has decided to reassess commercial establishments as the municipality officials have to answer to auditors’ queries. This step will generate revenue as well.
The VMC has decided to retender the shops at the earliest to avoid further revenue loss.”
“Some shops were auctioned earlier but later the shopkeepers surrendered the same as they failed to pay the monthly rent compelling the VMC to seal the shops four months ago. The council has decided to take strict action against them,” Shaikh warned.
