Mormugao Deputy Collector Gaurish Shankwalkar served 205 eviction notices directing the residents of the illegal shanties at Baina beach to vacate their shanties to save their lives and property from the rough sea condition and also to facilitate for the Water Resources Department (WRD) to carry out restoration and protection work of the beach.
It may be recalled that during the monsoon, the Baina beach got eroded due to which some coconut trees along the coast and some illegal huts near the sewerage treatment plant got washed away due to rough sea condition.
Sources in WRD said if the Baina beach is not restored and protected now, then during the next monsoon the entire beach along with the illegal huts will be washed away. “Until and unless the illegal huts are removed, we cannot carry out restoration and protection of the Baina beach,” said the source.
Meanwhile, Mormugao Mamlatdar Laximikant Desai through his office served demolition notices to the same 205 shanties at Baina beach, as it has come up in the CRZ and high tide zone.
Desai has fixed the first week of September to hear the residents of the illegal shanties and has directed them to present in his office with all their documents.
This is the second phase of demolition. During the first phase, about 77 illegal shanties were served eviction and demolition notices. On July 11, the South Goa Collector demolished 69 illegal shanties, while some residents approached the high court and brought a status quo on the remaining eight shanties, which were demolished on July 19.
