PANJIM: Being under government control has hampered the Goa Pharmacy college’s growth and despite many strides over the last fifty years it is currently positioned 21 among nearly a thousand colleges across the country.
Addressing media persons at a press conference on completion of golden jubilee of the college, Arun Naik, chairman of the Managing Council said that given that the college lacked autonomy, decision making was a lot slower.
College will be shifting to a new campus at Goa University campus. “There are limitations of this present campus,” Naik said
The college, was renamed the Goa College of Pharmacy in 1963 and separated from the Escola Médica after the Liberation of Goa brought it under Bombay University.
The College also hopes to be a PhD centre in pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology and other disciplines as well as start a drug information centre for the State which will constantly update information about drugs and their side effects and the other information.
Pharmacy profession is being practised in the state since 1842 and the Escola Médica de Goa started imparting studies in medicine and pharmacy. In 2009, the government appointed a management council to assist in various aspects of the college with representatives of industry, academicians, alumni and others to assist the College.
