PANJIM: Expressing displeasure over the sudden voluntary retirement (VRS) opted for by Goa Civil Services Officer Elvis Gomes, Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza on Friday hinted at possible ‘political victimisation’ that may have led the former to take the decision.
“I don’t know the exact reason for him to opt for VRS. There could be any possibility like victimization or political decision,” D’Souza said, referring to the FIR registered against Gomes in the Housing Board land scam.
“What the main reason is would be better answered by Elvis,” he said, adding that Gomes in his talk with the minister had clarified that he was not posted at the Housing Board during the period the scam took place. As per the FIR, the alleged land scam was reported between 2007-2011.
D’Souza is also the Minister for Urban Development while Gomes is the Director of Municipal Administration and member secretary of Goa State Urban Development Agency.
D’Souza said Gomes is eligible for VRS but the reason behind the decision is still not known. “In government service, some opt for VRS while others wait for retirement. It is not like politics. We have many good officers, who will now replace him,” D’Souza stated.
