PANJIM: One among every 22 persons in Goa is employed in the government sector, if the State’s population is taken to be 15 lakh.
With the BJP-led coalition government lifting the nine-month old recruitment ban, the number is expected to rise in the coming years.
As per data provided on the floor of the House, the government employee population in the State stands at 62,788 as on date. This includes 52,278 male employees and 10,510 female employees, clearly indicating that the government sector is male dominated.
From January 1, 2017, the government has introduced the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations to its employees.
In the private sector there are 74,919 people employed, and here too males dominate as there are 61,327 of them and 13,592 females. The information was provided by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in a written reply to a question raised by Congress MLA Luizinho Faleiro.
Government records indicate that there are 1,18,767 candidates registered for employment with the Employment Exchange, which include 73,877 in North Goa and 44,890 in South Goa. There are 63,146 male and 55,621 females unemployed.
“As and when the private sector employers notify the vacancies, the Employment Exchange sponsors the list of candidates as per their requirement to the employers and subsequently employers inform the sponsored candidates,” Parrikar said.
He said that in a bid to increase the accuracy of employment, so far three job fairs have been organised to bridge the gap between job seekers and job providers.
