MARGAO: The monsoon is almost knocking on the door and Salcete’s lack of preparedness for it has irked citizens who demanded that the civic bodies complete pre-monsoon works without further delay.
The clarion call for swift action arose after the brief spell of rain last month in just a day had uprooted trees and flooded many roads and low lying areas too.

The residents emphasized the necessity of promptly addressing crucial tasks such as cleaning drains and storm water channels, as well as the systematic trimming of overgrown bushes and overhanging tree branches. Locals are hopeful that work in this regard has already commenced, as the consequences of neglecting these measures can be severe.
While some areas, like the Cavelossim village panchayat or the Cuncolim Municipal Council, have already initiated the necessary preparations, other village panchayats are growing increasingly impatient with the bureaucratic setup, urging them to expedite the clearance of files and the sanctioning of works sent to their offices.
As for the Margao Municipal Council, there remain numerous areas where crucial work, such as the cleaning of drains, must be carried out without further delay. Locals have also called upon the District Disaster Management Authority to conduct a comprehensive survey of vulnerable locations, such as low-lying areas that experienced waterlogging or flooding during the previous monsoon season. This proactive measure is deemed essential to safeguard households in these areas and ensure that key roads remain accessible. Farmers are also concerned that their fields are not inundated with water when the heavy rains begin and there is no repeat of the problems they had to endure last year.
The residents’ pleas echo a shared concern – the need for authorities to address these pressing issues before the impending monsoon downpours arrive.
