PONDA: In a unique cleanliness drive, People of Ponda conducted its 23rd Consecutive Sunday Swaccha Bharat Abhiyan cleanliness awareness programme on Sunday by giving away a total of 100 kg of sugar to around 100 people, where anyone who brought in one kg of plastics was given one kg of sugar. Most of the volunteers were students.
The unique programme evoked positive response in creating awareness among students and people in maintaining the town and their surroundings clean. Ponda municipal councillors Geetali Talavlikar and Nidhi Mamlekar also participated in the Sunday drive, as also students from Kendriya Vidyalaya.
Earlier in the morning, POP held cleanliness drive near Ponda Police station and also appealed to the police to maintain the surrounding area free of garbage.
Later, Earth Day programme was held at Rajdeep Galaria where POP president Dr Rajendra Dev, Dr Ragunanda, Manoj Gaonkar, Anil Sahay, Sandeep Nigalye and other members were present.
In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal, POP started its mission Swacch Bharat since last November and held a series of cleanliness drives in Ponda town and Curti Panchayat.
According to POP member Pramodh Sawant POP members almost collected around 10 tonnes of garbage since last November and handed it over to the PMC every Sunday, after they work for one hour.
He said they are getting good response from students and expected that elders should also come forward and participate in the drive.
