PANJIM: A private bank has detected 1915 counterfeit Indian currency notes of different denominations including notes of Rs 1000 from July 2012 to July 2013. The total amount of the counterfeit notes is said to be around Rs 11.50 lakh.
In a report submitted to the Reserve Bank of India, a copy of which has been sent to the Economic Offences Cell of Goa police, the ICICI has said the fake currency notes were detected at all its branches across Goa during this period. The complaint has been filed against unknown persons and subsequently registered by the police.
More than a month ago, an offshore casino employee was booked for depositing counterfeit Rs 1000 notes at a Panjim bank. The EOC has received more than a dozen such cases this year till date.
It may be recalled that two years ago in July 2011, the Calangute police had recovered fake Indian rupee notes worth Rs 2.77 lakh hidden in an unused toilet flush tank at Vasco. The notes are brought into Goa to be used in casinos. A breakthrough was possible after police arrested two persons from the port town who were frequenting a casino in Calangute.
