PANJIM: The Smart City contractors have once again launched a war on the city. They have started digging the city roads on an aggressive scale. The situation is such that if you go by one street and try to return after 2 hours, they street is dug. Herald TV asked people “Has Panjim become a nightmare to commuters and tourists with non-stop digging?”
The most beautiful city in the country has become the ugliest in one shot. Thanks to all the political rogues we have. They are rogues, what else do we say? The only thing left, is to boot them out politically. There is not option left. They have become so hardened. They are not bothered about what you and I say. The only thing is to oust them through the ballot box. Are you talking of inconvenience (due to digging in Panjim) ? People are dying. The dust that is flying. People who live in Panjim who are 70 years and 80 years old are having lung diseases. Because of the quality of the air and mud which is getting into people’s system. I just don’t know what to say. We don’t know whether to laugh or to cry.

There is no voice of Opposition, except our voices who keep shouting to improve the lives of citizens. There is a very dangerous pit which they have dug outside Don Bosco High School, Panjim. Thousands of people went for Mass through Christmas and New Year. The entire Mahatma Gandhi Road has been dug. Why do they have to hurry with the digging and why are they doing this work during the super peak tourist season? Panjim has got a huge floating population of tourists. So do you want to discourage tourism? And do you want to make the life of Panjimites miserable? There is no place for parking. There is traffic chaos everywhere. This season of Christmas and New Year is the worst that senior citizens have faced in Panjim City.

There is no place for people to enter the city, roam around. There is no planning. There is no single traffic cop at congestion points. Even as the contractors have to put traffic wardens as per the contract signed, there are no traffic wardens. On Thursday, I went to Alfran Plaza, near Don Bosco School. I went around 5.30pm, but when I wanted to return at 7.30pm they had dug the place and I could not return via the regular route. There is no forewarning. There are no sign boards and there are no indication of diversions. People follow a particular route and then they have to turn all the way back, leading to excruciating traffic congestion.
