PORVORIM: Goa State Legislative Assembly on Thursday congratulated Shikha Pandey for being the first Goan woman cricketer and pace bowler for performing well while representing Indian women’s cricket team in recently concluded World Cup held in England. The House also congratulated Tracy Fernandes for representing Indian women’s cricket team as team’s physiotherapist.
The congratulation motion was moved by Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar who said that he is linked with cricket and knows Shikha personally. In the past GCA has organised women cricket tournament under floodlights where women have shown good performance.
Saligao MLA and Minister Jayesh Salgaonkar, Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao, Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte congratulated Shikha for her performance. Khaunte said that government should come out with a scheme to motivate women in sports.
Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha said that achieving runners-up position the girls have proved that they are as capable as the men in blue.
“Watching this young Goan cricketer perform so well was a treat to the whole country and for Goa in particular”, she said.
While congratulating Shikha, Dhavalikar said that women are still backward in cricket and she practised cricket with the boys in her initial practice.
Minister for Sport Manohar Azgaonkar said that government will try to give best of the facilities to the players in Goa. He said that government has decided to construct an international cricket stadium at Dhargalim with 50,000 capacity.
