Marathi Academy gives GU 15 days to recruit more teachers

Marathi Department has only 1 Professor; GMA says only 50% of portion has been completed

PANJIM: With just one Professor handling the entire MA Marathi section of Goa University (GU), the Gomantak Marathi Academy (GMA) on Thursday has given the University Vice-Chancellor 15 days to induct new professors so students do not suffer any further.
“We have given a 15-day ultimatum to the VC of Goa University to do something about inducting new Marathi professors for MA. Currently the HoD, who is supposed to take one lecture, is handling six lectures. Not even 50 percent of the portion is complete and due to this the students are suffering,” GMA President Pradip Ghadi said.
He added, “At present there are about 44 percent posts vacant at the GU and it looks like no one is bothered, not even the Chief Minister who handles the education portfolio. We do not want the students of Marathi to suffer anymore.”
He said the VC told them that the October semester exams for MA Marathi students may be postponed if the syllabus is not completed within the time prescribed.
“This attitude shows that the government and GU are not interested in filling the vacancies. The VC also told us that by next year another 24 percent of the staff is going to retire. I think the government should seriously think on this matter,” he added.
The Vice-Chancellor was not available for comment.
