PANJIM: Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Francis D’Souza has said that except for the nurses, it is difficult to find other staff to work on contract at the Goa Medical College and Hospital.
D’Souza told Herald that GMC has been taking the nurses on contract to replace the ones availing long CCL (Child Care Leave).
Giving reasons the staff shortage and the attendant difficulties at the GMC, the health minister said LDCs, attendants and doctors do not want to join on contract.
“We have taken a decision to immediately appoint nurses replacing the ones who are on long CCL; there is no problem in getting nurses on contract, but the difficulty is in finding other staff on contract,” D’Souza said.
He informed that 52 nurses are already been taken on contract and the process for recruiting more is underway.
Most of those recruited are from the nursing institute, while some are from outside, he said adding the GMC has also recruited 25 staff nurses recently, who he said, would add to the strength of the existing ones.
There is shortage of nurses at GMC as some of them have been promoted and those vacancies are yet to be filled.
In its Sunday edition, Herald reported that GMC’s functioning has been hampered as 494 staff have gone on CCL in the last 15 months; and D’Souza was responding to the Sunday report.
Those who availed CCL include 35 doctors, 302 staff nurses and 150 other staff.
