Salaries of sarpanchas, panchas to be hiked

Panchayat Minister tells politicians not to interfere in Gram Sabhas

PANJIM: Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho announced that the salaries of the Zilla parishad members, Sarpanch, Deputy sarpanch and panchas will get enhanced.
Replying to cut motion on demands for panchayat, Godinho said the file for this has been already moved.
“Besides this, the funds for Zilla parishad members, which is presently Rs 30 lakh annually, will be increased to Rs 50 lakhs,” he said.
The minister also said that the garbage grants to village panchayats, which is currently Rs 1 lakh, will also be enhanced.
Pointing to demands for more funds to panchayats, he said, the government is seized of the matter and is working in this direction.
“My government has taken development works throughout Goa to improve lives of people of the state. We have not differentiated between ruling and opposition constituencies,” he said.
Godinho said that in Goa there are some villages which have seen lot of development while some have not while some are very rich and some poor.
“My thrust is to see that the poor panchayats need to be given more funds. And we will work towards this. We will increase the amount as need be,” he said.
However, he said, it is not possible to agree to all demands due to constraints of allotted budget.
GRAM SABHAS: Mauvin Godinho has urged the politicians not to get involved in the Gram Sabhas.
“Sometimes it is good and bad. Some matters are also sub-judice, hence we must leave them to court. Politicians should not be involved in gram sabhas. Leave the subject to the elected panchas,” he said.
“Don’t use gram sabha to negate things done as governance is a continuous process,” he added.
