The recent brazen assaults on police personnel that exposed the vulnerability of the very force meant to uphold security have drawn flak from activists, who have termed these incidents as ‘intolerable’ and have demanded swift and strong justice to ensure no one dares to raise a hand against the guardians of law.
It is pertinent to note that police officers were assaulted in three separate cases reported in Vasco, Fatorda, and Cuncolim jurisdictions. The incidents have raised alarm over the growing trend of aggression and hostility towards law enforcement officers in the State.
The attacks have sparked discussions within civil society and among community leaders, many of whom have expressed concern over the mounting risks faced by police personnel while performing their duties. Activists have called upon the government not only to ensure the safety of its officers but also to promote greater public awareness about respecting the role of the police.
“Assaults on policemen while on duty are unacceptable. They must be able to discharge their responsibilities without fear, pressure, or intimidation,” social activist Auda Viegas said, adding that only strict punishment will send a clear message and discourage others from repeating such acts.
She also warned that undermining the authority of law enforcers could destabilise the State’s law and order machinery. “If such attacks go unchecked, it will embolden others and weaken the rule of law. We cannot allow that to happen,” she emphasised.
Viegas concluded by saying that the way these cases are handled will set an important example for the future. “Justice must be swift and strong so that no one dares to raise a hand against the guardians of law,” she said.
