Tripurari Poornima celebrated with pomp

Tripurari Poornima, the festival of lights and lamps, was celebrated with great pomp at Vithalapur, Sanquelim, on Sunday with boat competition being the attraction for the tourists and devotees.
The festival of Tripurari Poornima is a State level festival celebrated by the Vitthalapur Ustas Samiti in association with the Department of Art and Culture, Department of Information and Publicity and Department of Tourism.
Tripurari Poornima is the full moon day in the Kartik month in a traditional Hindu calendar. The day celebrates the victory of Lord Shiva over demon Tripurasura and the destruction of the three cities, Tripuri, made by demons.
The Diwali festivities conclude on Tripurari Poornima and since the last several years, the festival at Sanquelim has gained importance at the State level because of the boat competition.
The programme started at about 7 pm with the procession of lord Shrikrishna, followed by sailing of lamps in river Valwanti.
On the occasion, a programme ‘Swaradhara’ was staged by Pt Prabhakar Karekar and Asha Khadilkar, followed by palanquin procession of Lord Vitthal Rakhumai, killing of demon Tripurasur, releasing of ‘Saranga’ (balloon lamp) in the sky, fireworks and a boat show.
Thousands of people from in and around Bicholim participated in the programme.
The GTDC has also arranged special bus service from Calangute, Miramar, Mapusa and Panjim. Locals and foreign tourists attended the programme.
