All-India YMCA basketball in Panjim

Bombay YMCA and Goa YMCA (Panjim) will organise the All-India Inter-YMCA basketball tournament in Goa from February 10 to 13 at Don Bosco Oratory’s Fr Benedict Furtado memorial indoor stadium, here.
The tournament will be an opportunity for Goa’s basketball fraternity to witness some top-notch basketball with many of the vying YMCA teams having National and State players in their ranks.
Incidentally, basketball was invented by James Naismith, a physical education instructor at the YMCA training school at Springfield Massachusetts, USA in 1891. Basketball today has become one of the world’s most popular sport.
Following teams from different YMCAs all over India will participate: New Delhi, Palakkad, Visakhapatnam, Pune, Hyderabad , Secunderabad, Coimbatore, Bareilly, Ernakulam, Kalyan, Calcutta, Guntur, Fort Cochin, YMCA College of Physical Education Chennai, Panjim YMCA and Bombay YMCA (A and B).
The tournament will be played on league-cum-knock out basis. Esmero Figueredo and John Joseph who will be present will conduct a special clinic for the referees on February 9 and for the players on February 10, according to P M Vaz, president, Goa YMCA.
