PANJIM: Vijay M Dhale of Amaravati and Anagha Yardi of Nashik emerged winners of the 51st LIC Western Zonal Chess Tournament in the men’s and women’s categories respectively, at Clube Tennis de Gaspar Dias, Miramar on Wednesday.
Vijay (1749) topped the chart with six points while Dinesh Bhandarkar of Mumbai came second with six points and Anant S Gokhale of Kolhapur had to settle for third spot who finished with five points.
In the women’s category, Anagha Yardi lead the board with six points while JP Sankpal of Satara bagged the second place with 5.5 points and Sandhya Kothi of Vadodara came third, who also finished on 5.5 points.
In the men’s carom, Prakash Gaikwad of Pune registered a hard fought win over SV Katnoriya of Pune with 25-5, 10-20, 18-15 points.
Earlier in the semi-finals, Prakash beat Pramod Jadhav (Mumbai) 24-10, 25-3 while
SV Katnoriya beat Mahesh More of Nasik 25-0, 25-10.
Pramod Jadhav (Mumbai) beat Mahesh More (Nasik ) 20-18, 25-16 to bag the third place.
Shilpa Palnitkar (Thane) beat Medha Mathkari (Pune) 25-11, 19-13 to clinch the women’s title.
Manasi Kadam (Thane) beat Anjali Siripuram (Mumbai) 24-2, 18-11 for the third place.
Earlier in the semis, Medha beat Manasi Kadam (Thane) 24-6, 23-7 while Shilpa beat Anjali Siripuram (Mumbai) 23-21, 25-5.
P. Dhar, Regional Manager (HRD), LIC of India, Western Zone gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of Barun Kumar Khan, Sr. Divisional Manager, LIC, Goa Division and K Pichaiperumal, Manager (Personnel), LIC, Goa Division.
