PANJIM: Minister for Waste Management Michael Lobo, said that the government has identified a site at the Pissurlem Industrial Estate (IE) for setting up an e-waste treatment facility.
He added that after the facility is set up at the Pissurlem IE, all the e-waste, which is being accumulated at various scrapyards in the State, would be treated there. He added that scrapyards located in the agricultural land in the villages, needs to be shifted in a demarcated area at any of the industrial estates.
“In order to shift these scrapyards, the govt has to demarcate land in any of the new industrial estates. We should not allow them to grow as they are a health hazard,” he added.
Lobo informed that CM Pramod Sawant has already directed the deputy collectors to remove such scrapyards that have come up in their jurisdictions as they are not legally set up. The Minister also said the govt has decided to set up a biomedical waste treatment plant at Kundaim industrial estate on a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis.
Six-seven bidders have responded to the expression of interest (EOI). “However, queries have been raised over EOI document, which the department has asked the consultant to correct,” he added. He also informed that the estimated cost of the construction of the proposed bio-medical waste treatment plant is Rs 12 crore, and added that the govt is examining whether it could be built on its own.
