MARGAO: Alert residents of Mandopa-Navelim literally took on a two-member gang of burglars late Tuesday night even as the Goa police managed to nab one of the accused after a combing operation that lasted 2 to 3 hours, culminating in the wee hours of Wednesday.
The accused Shankar Neugi from Karnataka is presently convalescing at the Hospicio hospital after he was thrashed by the irate locals after the chase.
The incident occurred around midnight when a local resident Alitaire found a gang of persons preparing to commit burglary in the house of one Joseph. After both Alitaire and Joseph raised an alarm, the duo along with Paulsy gave the trio a hot chase, but the gang jumped into a rivulet and crossed onto the other side and started hurling stones at them. As the gang challenged the trio to nab them, the latter telephoned the police, which mobilised a strong police force to launch a massive manhunt in the bushes of Mandopa. It is learnt that the district police chief Shekhar Prabhudesai, DySP Mohan Naik, PIs Sudesh Naik and Harish Madkaikar, besides PSI Melson Colaco along with around 40 constables, besides local residents joined in the combing operation.
SP Prabhudesai told the media that the accused Neuge was found hiding in the bushes, while his accomplice managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
