Labourers working at the construction of the approach road to the Majorda subway had a miraculous escape following a blast in the underground power cable.
The incident occurred when a JCB was excavating the earth when the machine hit an underground cable, causing a blast.
Contractor Summerwell De Gama told newsmen at the site that around 25 workers who were working in the trench had just come out for the lunch break when the blast occurred.
“The incident could have caused a major tragedy at the spot. There were neither drawings nor plan given by the authorities when the work was underway at the site”, Gama said.
Taking serious note of the incident, which could have cost the lives of the workers, Gama approached the Colva police for registering a complaint, but the police told him that no case is made out since the blast caused no injury or loss of property.
The incident has come as an eye opener since different agencies have laid their cables underground close to each other without any coordination. In the instant case, the underground power cable was found laid less than a meter inside the ground which has been left damaged by the excavation work.
