PANJIM: Even after the 61-day fishing ban ended on July 31, fishermen have not been able to venture into the sea in the absence of labourers. The fishing season commenced in the State from August 1 but hardly any fishing trawlers have set out from Malim jetty. Francis D’Souza, deputy chairman of Mandovi Fisheries Cooperative Society said that just about 7 to 8 fishing trawlers ventured into the sea on Wednesday, while on Tuesday not a single one had set forth.
He said labourers from Karnataka and Orissa have not returned to Goa, but would be reaching soon. “We are ready with our boats, the weather is also favourable for fishing but in the absence of the workers we cannot venture in the sea,” a trawler owner said.
